    From Spungebaw:

    1st December @ 1:16 AEDT:

"Singapore has denied a request for the mother of Nguyen Tuong Van to hug her condemned son before he is hanged, allowing her only to hold hands as she pays a final, limited contact visit before his execution."

Nguyen is a Vietnamese Australian convicted of drug trafficking in Singapore. His crime carries a mandatory death sentence under the Misuse of Drugs Act. Despite pleas of clemency from the Australian government and others he faces execution by hanging on the 2nd December 2005.

At 9:00am AEDT tomorrow morning, the church bell will ring 25 times, in remembrance of Nguyen's 25 years of living...

Once upon a time, I was on the fence about the death penalty.  But now...every Democrat bone in my body says it's wrong.  I do not support it - it's neither a deterrent nor a real provider of closure.  No one benefits, not even society.

Johnnyork show was great tonight. I'll write about it tomorrow.

    Ciao

  • I understand where you are coming from.  I am very liberal except when it comes to crime.  Like Chris Rock said there are some things I'm liberal about and there are other things I 'm conservative about.  In the instance your talking about, I am with you.  But there are some sick motherfuckers out there who deserve the death penalty and with today's technology there should never be cases where innocents get sent to die. Somehow, there still will be, but that will prolly be in Texas.  I have worked with youthful sex offenders and been horrified by what some have said at times.  I don't believe in the doube jeopardy that the Supreme Court has justified for sex offenders but sometimes I feel better about it.  It depends on the sitch.  BTW I dig your taste in music, very eclectic and cool.

  • thank you for posting this up dear friend...

the Australians have been trying to appeal to fight for a life sentence in jail instead of a death sentence for him. according to the law in Singapore, the quantity of heroin he was carrying was far far over the limit, so... he has been in jail for 3 years already.. in this minute there is nothing else the aussie government could do for him anymore... except praying for him... all funeral services are ready, jus hope that his soul is able to come back to Australia... very sad indeed..

  • Yay! I'm glad the show was great!

I agree with you about the death penalty. When a government institutionalizes violence, the outcome is completely certain: the government in question will continue to foster a violent society.

  • wow that's awesome. i'm sorry i missed it. 311 s. wacker is the diamond ring building that shines brightly in the chicago skyline. it's amazing! but they usually only turn it on between dusk and maybe 10:30pm. then it's off for the night, but for some reason it was on ALL NIGHT! so pretty.
